Nanda Soobben
South African political cartoonist. First Black cartoonist employed full-time by a mainstream South African paper, the Daily News, in 1985.
Biography
Nanda Soobben began his career at Post (Natal) in 1980 and in 1985 became the first Black South African cartoonist to be employed full-time as an editorial cartoonist by a mainstream paper, the Daily News. His drawings — striking caricatures with intricate hatching, cropped close to fill the frame and punctuated by bold statements across the remaining space — have appeared in Post, the Daily News, The Mercury, the Weekly Mail, ThisDay and the Saturday Independent.
His book of apartheid-era cartoons is held in the Smithsonian Institution's African Library Collection. He runs a school of cartooning, animation and design in Durban.
